10 potential Man Utd shirt number changes including dream Bruno Fernandes option

In the modern game, footballers are either desperate to have their favourite shirt number… or they couldn’t care less.

They’re a big deal at Manchester United, where players want to follow in the footsteps of Eric Cantona, Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and other legends. And there are some iconic numbers up for grabs, with the likes of Paul Pogba and Juan Mata leaving Old Trafford.

But what changes are expected? Here, Mirror Football highlights 10 Red Devils who could bag themselves a new shirt number this summer – including the talismanic Bruno Fernandes, two promising youngsters and a frustrated goalkeeper.

Scott McTominay

Pogba’s exit means the No6 is now up for grabs at United. McTominay is currently wearing the No39, which is hardly a glamorous number (unless you’re Nicolas Anelka). The 25-year-old may fancy an upgrade and decide to take Gary Pallister’s famous No6 jersey.

That being said, McTominay has wore the No39 since he broke into United’s first-team in 2017-18. Many current Premier League stars have kept their debut jerseys, such as Declan Rice at West Ham (No41) and Trent Alexander-Arnold at Liverpool (No66). It all depends on whether McTominay’s current number has any sentimental value. We’ll find out shortly.

Raphael Varane

Which Manchester United players will get a new shirt number this summer? Let us know in the comments below!

The 29-year-old is famed for wearing the No4 at international level with France, winning the World Cup in Russia four years ago. Varane has currently got the No19 at United, and he may want to revert back to his favourite jersey after a tough season.

The defender played just 22 Premier League games in his debut season, helping United finish in a disappointing sixth. The No4 will become available if current holder Phil Jones – who reportedly refused to hand over his jersey last season – leaves the club this summer. The Englishman isn’t expected to be part of manager Erik ten Hag’s plans.

Bruno Fernandes

Fernandes will surely take the No8. The Portuguese playmaker wore the jersey at Sporting Lisbon and can finally claim it at United when Mata leaves the club later this month. The Spaniard has held the No8 since he signed for United in January 2014.

Fernandes loves the No8 so much he’s got a tattoo of it on his right forearm. The 27-year-old is currently wearing the No18 – a famous jersey at Old Trafford thanks to Paul Scholes – yet he would love to be reunited with his old number this summer.

Victor Lindelof

The Sweden international wears the No3 for his country, a shirt that could become available at United if Eric Bailly leaves the club as rumoured. Lindelof is currently wearing the No2 and leaving it behind could allow a right-back to grab the traditional jersey.

Another option for the 27-year-old is the No14. The 27-year-old wore that number at Benfica and has even sported it for his country. It will become available this summer when England international Jesse Lingard leaves Old Trafford after 22 years of service.

Alejandro Garnacho

The 17-year-old recently inspired United to victory in the FA Youth Cup final – scoring twice in a 3-1 win against Nottingham Forest – and was recently called up to Argentina’s senior squad alongside Lionel Messi, although he’s yet to make his senior debut.

United fans are excited to see Garnacho play regularly under Ten Hag in 2022-23. He currently wears the No75 but needs a jersey to reflect his progression into the first team. The No14 and No18 – two iconic numbers – could both be available this summer.

Diogo Dalot can follow in the footsteps of Gary Neville by taking the No2 if Lindelof ditches the jersey. The Portuguese right-back has made the position his own this season – snatching it from Aaron Wan-Bissaka – and would surely gain confidence by wearing the No2. He currently wears the No20.

Hannibal Mejbri is expected to have a breakthrough season at Old Trafford in 2022-23 and may want a number to reflect his ambition. The 19-year-old midfielder currently wears the No46, although the No14 or No18 would be more fitting for a youngster of his talent.

Dean Henderson reportedly wants to leave United but still has three years left on his contract. The 25-year-old is the second-choice goalkeeper behind David de Gea and may want to swap his No26 for the more traditional No13 if he stays in Manchester.

Jadon Sancho didn’t have a great first season at United – scoring just three Premier League goals – and may want to ditch the No25. As previously mentioned, the No14 and No18 could become available this summer – giving him a new identity at Old Trafford.

Anthony Elanga enjoyed a breakthrough season under ex-boss Ralf Rangnick in 2021-22, making 27 appearances and scoring a memorable goal against Atletico Madrid. The 20-year-old deserves an upgrade and may swap his No36 for No14 or No18.
