The all-new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is a British full-size SUV that is offered with two wheelbases and in two- and three-row configurations with seating for up to seven passengers. Today’s redesigned Range Rover is a fifth-generation model, which follows a line of predecessors introduced in 1969. Early models utilized a body-on-frame chassis, a rugged 4×4 powertrain, and an interior that was designed for utility – the vinyl seats and interiors could be hosed out.
Today’s Range Rover is built with a unibody platform, an even more capable 4×4 system, and a well-appointed interior that rivals the finest luxury automobiles on the road. Capable, luxurious, and boasting some well-deserved cachet, the all-new 2022 Land Rover Range Rover is recognized as the gold standard in SUVs.
2022 Land Rover Range Rover Powertrain
Standard P400 models are fitted with a turbocharged and supercharged 3.0-liter inline-6 engine with 48-volt hybrid assistance. This Ingenium family powerplant is rated at 395 horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. It provides a 0-60 mph sprint in just under 6 seconds and will deliver up to 26 mpg on the highway. The P530 models are fitted with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8. Sourced from BMW, the engine is rated at 532 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque. The V8 delivers a 0-60 mph sprint in just over 4 seconds while earning 21 mpg on the open highway. An 8-speed torque converter automatic is standard on all models.
The Range Rover boasts an intelligent All-Wheel Drive (iAWD) transmission controlled by Land Rover’s Intelligent Driveline Dynamics (IDD) system. The computerized system continuously monitors each tire’s grip and distributes it between the front and rear axles (and across the axle) to optimize traction both on- and off-road. In addition, all Range Rover models are also fitted with an Active Locking Rear Differential that adds even more capability off-road.
2022 Land Rover Range Rover Interior
It’s a challenge to find a passenger compartment as luxurious as that found in the all-new Range Rover – regardless of price. Land Rover appoints the cabin with gorgeous leathers, fine woods, and premium metal trims. The overall appearance is upscale and modern – warm and inviting – despite a heavy integration of innovative technology. The operator faces an elegant 13.7-inch Interactive Driver Display, which offers several different visual configurations (including a conventional analog appearance). Infotainment is projected on a 13.1-inch floating display that controls nearly all of the vehicle’s functions. There are analog dials for climate control, driving modes, and a dedicated audio volume control – all well positioned and easy to use. The shifter is a raised rocker on the center console (the flush start/stop button is to its right).
The front seats are very comfortable and supportive for all body sizes. There is generous head, shoulder, and legroom for both front occupants (the seat controls are on the doors, which makes them easy to operate). The second row is nearly as comfortable as the front, with outboard passengers sitting in seats that closely mirror the seats in front of them in terms of design and support. The middle passenger sits on a flat cushion, but it’s more than adequate for short trips. Range Rover is offering a third row, but it still isn’t adult-sized – kids will find it okay. Those seeking the ultimate in luxury need to opt for the SV Signature Suite in the long-wheelbase (LWB) model. It boasts 24-way reclining seats in the second row, complete with massage functionality. A deployable Club Table allows passengers to work while they travel first class.
How does the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Drive?
Land Rover focused a lot of attention on on-road driving dynamics, and its hard work paid off immensely. The vehicle utilizes the brand’s MLA-Flex architecture, which is aluminum-intensive (more than 75 percent of the structure is alloy). As a result, the vehicle is lighter and chassis rigidity is impressive – this provides a solid foundation for the suspension and nearly eliminates squeaks and rattles inside the cabin. The Range Rover is fitted with twin-valve air suspension, 48-volt electronic anti-roll bars, and four-wheel steering as standard equipment. In addition, the vehicle may be raised up to 11.6 inches of ground clearance (or dropped 5.7 inches to ease entry/egress). Wheel sizes range from 18- to 20-inches in diameter.
The 2022 Range Rover drives astonishingly well on the road – it’s one of the most comfortable SUVs I’ve driven in a long time. It is agile and easy to maneuver on even curvy roads (credit low profile tires and rear-axle steering) despite its substantial size. The overall theme is luxury, so the ride is comfortable and never harsh. Thanks to a low drag coefficient (Land Rover claims an impressive .30 Cd., making it the most aerodynamically efficient SUV on the road), laminated glass, and abundant sound insulation, the cabin is whisper-quiet on the road. Off-road, the vehicle can drive down dirt roads, climb steep grades, bound over rocks, and push through snow drifts without breaking a sweat – its only limitation is tire choice (summer or low profile all-season tires will reduce capability). And if anyone is thinking about crossing a river or stream, the Range Rover is capable of wading in water 34.5” deep.
How Much Does the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover Cost?
Land Rover is offering two models in the US market (a PHEV is arriving for 2023). The Range Rover P400 SE (SWB), with a mild hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-6, begins at about $105,000. The Range Rover P530, with a 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, starts at about $123,000. The top-of-the-line model is the Range Rover P530 First Edition (LWB), which has a suggested retail price of about $170,000.
