The Umbrella Academy is currently dominating the charts on Netflix, #1 in most countries around the world, but it does not have the luxury of being pre-greenlit for season 4, the way we see with some of Netflix’s other big hits.
Despite a large budget with all its superpowered, apocalyptic effects, given its performance and past viewership, it would be a bit of a shock if it was not renewed, especially since the showrunner has said he always has had four seasons in mind, and it seems like the series could end with just one more season. But Netflix is in quite a cost-cutting move these days, so don’t take anything for granted.
Showrunner Steve Blackman spoke to THR about a possible season 4, giving us our only real update about the possibility of it so far. Spoilers follow for the end of season 3:
“We haven’t been picked up — I have my fingers crossed. But I know what season four is in my head. I’ve already sort of worked out the beginning, middle and end of it. When I started this thing, I sort of knew four seasons of the show. I have nothing passed that in my brain, but I’ve sort of kept to a trajectory. So, I have a really good sense of what season four would be, and it should be just as bonkers as the other seasons — what a challenge these superheroes, this family has being powerless.”
The Umbrella Academy season 3 ends on a purposeful cliffhanger, where the team may have saved all of existence, but the new world that’s been created has left them A) without their powers B) missing a few members and with C) Reginald Hargreeves, their hateful alien father, ruling the city as a business tycoon.
Blackman seems to indicate the power loss is not something that’s going to be immediately rectified. In addition to more practical concerns (like Luther finally being able to exist without his gorilla suit padding), the idea is that they can see what it might be like to live more normal lives, free from their “marigold” powers. But we still need to know more about Hargreeves’ alien history and the genesis of the powered chosen to begin with, which I have to believe the series would explore before it ended for good.
In terms of an actual timeline for Umbrella Academy season 4, without a renewal, there’s not a release date. Season 2 debuted on July 20, 2020, while season 3 arrived on June 22, 2022. That’s a two-year break, but this was obviously in the height of pandemic delays, and most shows had about a 2-3 year break around then. The Umbrella Academy season 1 debuted on February 15, 2019, so the original break was more like a year and a half, at most. If we do that again, that would put the Umbrella Academy release date around maybe December, 2023. But again, it has to get renewed first. Hopefully we’ll hear about that soon.
