Arsenal news: Edu eyes £67m transfer as future Gunners coach claim made

Arsenal transfer chief Edu is reportedly ready to take matters into his own hands and submit a whopping £67million offer for Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta.

The midfielder has been linked with a summer move and Arsenal and Newcastle United are both thought to be keen to sign him. And reports have suggested that the Gunners’ technical director is ready to formalise the club’s interest in the coming days.

The move would certainly have the approval of Arsenal legend Thierry Henry after he waxed lyrical about the attacking midfielder last year. It comes as Mohamed Elneny’s dad has said he expects the midfielder “will coach Arsenal” when he retires.

Edu eyes £67m transfer

Arsenal technical director Edu is reportedly keen to bring Lucas Paqueta to the club this summer.

The Lyon midfielder impressed in Ligue 1 last season, with nine goals and six assists in 35 league appearances. That form is believed to have caught Edu’s attention, although Newcastle United are also thought to be keen on signing him.

Reports suggest Edu wants to make an offer for the attacking midfielder in the coming days, although Lyon have put a £67million price tag on his head. And the Gunners need Lyon to lower that asking price in order to get the move over the line.

Henry’s Lucas Paqueta verdict

Thierry Henry would certainly be excited to see Lucas Paqueta sign for his former club.

The Arsenal legend revealed his admiration for the Brazilian on Amazon Prime Video last year. Henry praised the midfielder for “his desire, his activity, his selflessness, his commitment” while on punditry duty for the streaming service.

But the former Gunners forward reserved special praise for the way Paqueta attacks and defends for his team – and that he does both sides of the game “with a smile”.

Elneny ‘will coach Arsenal’

Mohamed Elneny’s dad has said he thinks the midfielder will “coach Arsenal” one day.

The Egyptian came very close to leaving the Gunners this summer, earning himself a new contract with some fine performances towards the end of last season. And the player’s dad, Nasser Elneny, has now opened up on his son’s situation, revealing he was “sure that Elneny would continue with Arsenal”.

Elneny Snr. also revealed his son is “loved among his colleagues in the dressing room” – and that he expects the midfielder to coach the club one day.
