Arsenal news: Mikel Arteta confirms transfer plans as William Saliba makes decision

Although Champions League football may elude them this season, Arsenal supporters will be hopeful their team can finish a campaign of encouragement on a high.

Back-to-back defeats against Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United means that Spurs have their top-four destiny in their own hands heading into the final day, with a point at Norwich City enough for them to book a Champions League berth for next term.

Arsenal host Everton in their final game of the campaign. They will need to capitalise on potentially relaxed opposition after the Toffees confirmed their Premier League status on Thursday and hope for a miracle at Carrow Road too.

Mirror Sport has all of the latest Arsenal news ahead of the final weekend of a season that has been frustrating and promising in equal measure for Mikel Arteta’s team.

Arteta confirms transfer plans

The Arsenal manager has confirmed that the club will need to spend wisely in the summer, as they attempt to bridge the gap to the Premier League’s elite.

When they have been able to call on their best XI, the Gunners have looked like a match for any team in the league in 2021-22. However, injuries and suspensions have exposed the lack of squad depth at times this season in crucial games.

After spending in the region of £150 million last summer, Arteta was asked what the next window had in store for the club.

“We are going to have certain resources, not unlimited resources, some resources,” he said. “And with our resources we have to play and do what we have to do in the best possible way. We don’t know what the rest are going to have in terms of resources, which I’m assuming is going to be challenging because now it’s not a top three or top four league.

“Now it is a top eight or 10 teams that are involved. That’s why we have to find a way to do again what we did last summer.”

Saliba’s transfer intent

William Saliba has reportedly advised Marseille that he would be open to making a permanent move to the club at the end of the season.

The young Frenchman is with the Ligue 1 club on loan from Arsenal and he has impressed in the main this season. Saliba has established himself as one of the best defenders in the division and has broken into the senior France squad this season too.

According to reports in his homeland, Saliba now wants to make the move to Marseille a permanent one, that despite that fact he is highly regarded at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal have found a strong partnership at the back this season in Ben White and Gabriel, although Saliba would provide excellent competition for places if he was to be part of the squad next season.

Jesus valuation reported

Manchester City have reportedly placed a £55 million asking price on Gabriel Jesus, a player Arsenal are said to be keen on.

Despite showing flashes of quality in a sky blue shirt, the Brazil international has never fully established himself in the team under Pep Guardiola. The Gunners are said to be ready to bring Jesus to the capital as a result, where he would become a key part of Arteta’s plans.

However, according to reports the Premier League champions will not budge on their asking price, meaning a potential transfer saga involving the 25-year-old may stretch across the summer window.
