Mikel Arteta has a bit of a transfer headache at Arsenal.
The Gunners have had a highly successful transfer window so far, welcoming the arrivals of Brazilian wonderkid Marquinhos from Sao Paulo, former New England Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner, Portuguese playmaker Fabio Vieira and ex-Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus. But after years of poor recruitment at the Emirates, Arteta faces heading into the new season with plenty of deadwood still at the club.
It comes as the Gunners have reportedly submitted an offer to bring in their fifth summer signing as they target Lille winger Edon Zhegrova. And transfer chief Edu has joined his son Luigi Gaspar in announcing that he has signed for a new club after Arsenal decided to let him go.
Arteta’s transfer headache
Arsenal are struggling to get rid of a handful of players this summer despite bringing in a number of new faces.
Mikel Arteta continues to overhaul his playing squad, but is struggling to move on some of the deadwood. Bernd Leno, Lucas Torreira, Pablo Mari and Nicolas Pepe have all been deemed surplus to requirements but are yet to secure their exits out of north London.
The club may well need to shift their wages in order to make any more big moves this summer, and more signings may be needed to secure a place in the top four next season.
Fifth signing eyed
Arsenal are reportedly hoping to make Lille winger Edon Zhegrova their fifth summer signing.
The Kosovan winger only joined the Ligue 1 outfit in January but Arsenal have been so impressed with his performances that they hope to cut his time in France short. A bid of around £6million is said to have been submitted for a player who has earned the nickname the ‘Kosovan Messi’.
Zhegrova could prove to be an far cheaper alternative to Leeds United winger Raphinha, who had been targeted earlier in the summer before he informed the Gunners he has his heart set on a move to Barcelona.
Edu joins son as he signs for new club
Arsenal transfer chief Edu joined his son Luigi Gaspar as the 18-year-old midfielder announced he would be joining Watford.
The youngster’s contract at the Emirates expired this summer but he has wasted little time in finding himself a new employer. Gaspar sealed his move to Watford, where he is expected to develop within the Hornet’s academy.
And Edu sat alongside his son as he penned his deal with Watford, understandably beaming with pride as they posed for pictures of the memorable moment.
