The two teams meet at Wembley in a repeat of the Carabao Cup final, which the Reds won 10-11 on penalties following a 0-0 draw. On that occasion, Romelu Lukaku came on as a second-half substitute – but his talents may give the Blues an advantage this time around.
It comes as reports suggest Chelsea have identified Barcelona pair Sergino Dest and Neto as transfer targets this summer – and could offer a double player swap to secure the signings. And an injury update has been issued on the Blues’ players currently in the treatment room ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final.
Here are Mirror Football’s latest Chelsea headlines.
Blues chase double Barcelona swap
Chelsea could chase Barcelona duo Sergino Dest and Neto this summer, according to reports.
The Blues could even offer Barcelona two of their players in order to secure the pair, with the Spanish outfit widely reported to be interested in signing Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta. Both Chelsea players are only contracted to the Stamford Bridge club until the end of next season and so they may decide to try ad offload them both this summer rather than risk losing them for nothing in a year’s time.
And with the Blues keen to follow up their January interest in Dest, they are also said to have a move for Neto “under consideration”.
Updates have been given on Chelsea’s injured contingent ahead of Saturday’s FA Cup final against Liverpool.
Mateo Kovacic, N’Golo Kante, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Ben Chilwell have all been in the treatment room in recent weeks and have faced a race against time to be fit in time to play at Wembley. But only Kante looks likely to be in the mix come Saturday, as Kovacic, Hudson-Odoi and Chilwell missing out.
Kovacic picked up a reoccurrence his recent ankle injury against Leeds, while Hudson-Odoi has been out of action since March with an Achilles injury and Chilwell has already been ruled out for the season with an ACL tear. But Kante appears to be recovering from an unknown injury and could well be involved against Liverpool.
Lukaku threat identified
Romelu Lukaku could prove to be key if Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea are going to lift the FA Cup this weekend.
With opponents Liverpool battling for trophies on four fronts this season, they clearly have very few weaknesses. But they have sometimes had problems dealing with counter-attacks – where Lukaku’s skillset shines.
And should the Belgium international start he could prove important for his side – particularly with Reds defensive midfielder Fabinho set to miss the match through injury.
