Chelsea news: Raphinha transfer “urgency” as Barcelona row stalls Ousmane Dembele deal

When Thomas Tuchel steered Chelsea to Champions League glory in 2021, few would have anticipated the significant changes the team would undergo in the coming transfer windows.

This summer, the Blues are seemingly rebuilding some key positions, with Romelu Lukaku shipped out and Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen leaving on free transfers. It means Chelsea may look very different in both boxes next season, with a number of players set to arrive to bolster the squad.

Raheem Sterling looks increasingly likely to be one, with the Manchester City forward seemingly the club’s top target. However, if Tuchel wants to take the team back to the pinnacle of European football and the Premier League, more new faces will surely be on the way.

Marsch admits Raphinha urgency

Leeds manager Jesse Marsch has admitted there is an “urgency” on the part of Raphinha to sort his future, amid continued links to both Barcelona and Chelsea.

The Blues are said to have agreed terms over the Brazil international, although a deal is yet to be finalised as the Catalan giants remain in the transfer race. Raphinha excelled in a struggling Leeds team last season and is naturally keen on a move to a Champions League club.

Marsch has admitted as much and provided an update on the player’s mindset as he returned to pre-season training. “Raphinha returned to training today, good attitude,” he said. “Wouldn’t commit to him being in Australia with things capable of moving quickly in the next few days.

Marsch also added: “There’s urgency from his end to come up with a solution. I know he has hopes and dreams. We’ll see in the next few days. We’ll see how things progress day by day for Raphinha.”

Dembele and Raphinha tug-of-war at Barcelona

Differences in opinion at Barcelona are said to be holding up a potential move for Raphinha and a possible new contract for Ousmane Dembele.

Dembele’s deal at Barcelona is set to expire in the coming days, although according to reports there was belief that an extension had been agreed between the player and club. Blaugrana manager Xavi is said to be a huge fan of the Frenchman, who returned to form late last season.

However, Barcelona’s sporting director Mateu Alemany is rumoured to prefer Raphinha, albeit he would cost in the region of £60million to prise away from Leeds.

The internal dispute has effectively brought negotiations to a halt for both Dembele – who has also been linked with Chelsea – and Raphinha. Barcelona’s financial situation means they will only likely be able to afford to have one of the two wingers on their books.

Drinkwater lifts lid on Chelsea nightmare

Former Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater has spoken out about his nightmare spell at the club.

The England international moved from from Leicester City to the Blues in 2017 for a fee of £35million. However, he made just 23 appearances for the Stamford Bridge club and was released this summer after the expiration of his contract.

The 32-year-old is now looking for a new team and has been speaking about where things went wrong in West London.

“I’m relieved, because it’s clear it wasn’t a situation that was good for me or the club,” he said. “I’m angry because of how it’s gone and how I was treated – not bitter though, what ifs. It was a long time coming.”
