‘Evangelion: 3.0+1.0’ Will Finally Get A U.S. Theatrical Release Later This Year

It took a while, but Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 will be released theatrically in the U.S. later this year, with a home video release planned not long after.

Courtesy of GKIDS, this theatrical and home video release follows the streaming release on Amazon Prime from Summer of last year.

It’s likely that the streaming availability of Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 will impact ticket sales at theaters, as well as the pick-up rate of the home video versions, but I am still glad GKIDS has stepped in to handle this.

Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 is the final part in the Rebuild of Evangelion movie tetralogy, which in turn was a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion TV anime series and subsequent movies.

That said, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 felt like a proper conclusion to the original series as well as these new movies and I really enjoyed it when it was originally released in Japan last year.

So the fact that fans in the U.S. can now see it on the big screen is something that is appreciated, albeit overdue.

Evangelion is definitely an important series, though not without its clear and obvious inspirations, so I am glad all of it is now widely available again outside of Japan.

There are currently no dates specified for the theatrical or home video releases, but I am sure that GKIDS will rectify this oversight in the near future.
