Liverpool news: Bayern chief makes transfer claim as Reds fight Man City for England star

The mood among Liverpool supporters is curious at the moment.

Although there is immense pride at how close the team came to winning all four trophies last season – as evidenced by the massive parade in the city after their Champions League loss to Real Madrid – there is also some pondering as to what comes next.

Manchester City have already strengthened their stellar squad with the signing of Erling Haaland, meaning the Reds will potentially have an even bigger gap to bridge. That task won’t be made easier should Sadio Mane depart, with speculation linking him with a move to Bayern Munich.

Bayern chief provides Mane update

Bayern president Herbert Hainer believes the club is capable of signing any player in the world, amid continued links with Mane.

The German champions could be set to lose both Robert Lewandowski and Serge Gnabry this summer, meaning they will be on the hunt for attacking reinforcements. It would appear the versatile Liverpool forward is at the top of their list of possible targets.

Although Bayern play in a division where they are the dominant force by a considerable distance, Hainer still thinks the club has what it takes to attract the world’s best players to the Allianz Arena.

“If we really want a player, we are able to get him, but he has to suit us,” he said.

Fight on for Phillips

Liverpool are ready to compete with City for the signing of Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips.

With Fernandinho leaving the club at the end of the previous season, City boss Pep Guardiola will be on the lookout for a holding midfielder. The England international has been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium in recent weeks.

However, the Premier League winners may not have things all their own way in pursuit of the player, with Liverpool also said to be admirers.

The Reds are reported to be ready to accept defeat in their efforts to sign Aurelien Tchouameni from Monaco – he is poised to join Real Madrid – and as a result will look elsewhere in their efforts to strengthen their midfield.

Reds give up on Gavi

Liverpool have reportedly opted against pursuing Barcelona midfield sensation Gavi.

The 17-year-old enjoyed an extraordinary breakthrough season in 2021-22, cementing his status as a first-team regular for both Barcelona and Spain.

The Blaugrana have been seeking to tie him down to fresh terms since in recent months, potentially opening the door for other clubs to bring him in. Liverpool, who are said to be on the hunt for a new central midfielder, are one.

But reports in Spain suggest the Reds will not pursue any deal. While the release clause in Gavi’s current contract is just £42 million, Barcelona are close to agreeing fresh terms that include a massive £860 million trigger fee.
