Liverpool news: Brazilian starlet’s “dream” as Reds join race for Arsenal target

Liverpool have been given extra time to recharge after the postponement of their Premier League clash with Chelsea, but there’s plenty going on in the background.

Jurgen Klopp’s team picked up a big result in their final game before the international break, with Joel Matip’s late winner giving them all three points in a tight Champions League group game against Ajax. However, they go into the break sitting eighth in the Premier League with just two victories from six games in the competition.

If results continue along these lines, there will be calls for reinforcements in January, and there has already been some noise to that end. Here are the latest news lines coming out of Anfield.

Gomes’ Liverpool dream

Joao Gomes is the latest Brazilian talent to be linked with Liverpool, and the Flamengo youngster has already spoken of his fondness for the club. With the Reds signing Arthur Melo on loan, to go along with the likes of Alisson Becker and Roberto Firmino, there is already a strong core from the South American country.

“Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play,” the youngster said in a social media Q&A. “Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream and that of my family, my biggest dream in football.”

But what do we know so far about a player who has yet to play professionally outside his home country? Mirror Football has delved deeper into Joao Gomes’ career to date amid chatter over a move to Europe.

Minamino in familiar position

Despite scoring some important goals for Liverpool, Takumi Minamino was never able to cement a starting place at Anfield. After hitting double-figures in all competitions last season, the Japan international decided to try his luck elsewhere, making a permanent move to AS Monaco.

The forward has been labelled the flop of the season so far in French media, with questions asked about his physicality – as was the case in England. Since adding the former Red Bull Salzburg man to their ranks, last season’s third-place finishers were unable to earn a Champions League group stage spot, while Minamino’s Ligue 1 debut resulted in a 4-1 home defeat against Lens.

After six games without a goal for his new club, the 27-year-old finally got off the mark against Reims over the weekend. He has yet to complete a full 90 minutes, though, so there’s still some work to be done.

Reds in Mudryk race

While Liverpool’s January transfer plans are far from settled, they are already being linked with reinforcements. One of the players linked with a move is Mykhaylo Mudryk, the Ukrainian star who has been compared to Neymar.

The 21-year-old has been linked with a Premier League move in the past, with Brentford close to a deal in January. Arsenal and Everton have also been linked with the starlet, who has scored against RB Leipzig and Celtic in this season’s Champions League.

“I love this team and I love every guy in this team,” Mudryk said earlier this season, while opening the door to a potential exit further down the line. “Shakhtar for me it is now my home but for me it is very important that all my thoughts are about Shakhtar but in the winter [window] we will see.”
