Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp breaks silence on Paris chaos as ticket prices spark outcry

Just when Liverpool fans thought the club had settled off-the-field matters for the summer, more good news dropped on Thursday.

The Reds announced a new long-term contract for defender Joe Gomez, indicating a significant show of faith in a centre-back who struggled for regular minutes last season. In him, Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joel Matip, manager Jurgen Klopp has excellent depth in the position.

It also gives the group even more clarity heading into the new campaign, with pre-season training beginning to ramp up at the AXA training complex this week.

Klopp breaks silence on Paris chaos

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that his family were caught up in the pre-match chaos in Paris ahead of the Champions League final.

Thousands of supporters struggled to gain entry into the stadium on the night, while police indiscriminately targeted fans who had valid tickets with tear gas and pepper spray. An inquiry into the lack of organisation has been launched in France, with over 9,000 Liverpool fans delivering their testimony.

Speaking about the night, Klopp said his family didn’t reveal the true extent of their distress until the day after the match with Real Madrid.

“I heard first hand from my family because they were in the middle of everything. I didn’t hear about it properly until the next morning,” he said. “My family didn’t tell me on the night. They texted me before the game: ‘We are in, good luck’, stuff like this but they were pretty much one-and-a-half hours away from being in the stadium.

“They told me the next morning. What happened to them happened to everyone, pretty much. This is pretty much the story everyone told, everyone had this experience. I think I knew 50 people inside the stadium; 47 people told me exactly the same story. That is what I heard. That is obviously not how it should be.”

Outrage at ticket prices for Fulham fixture

Fulham have confirmed that tickets for their opening game of the new Premier League season against Liverpool will cost as much as £100.

The Reds will take on the newly-promoted side in the lunchtime kick-off on August 6 in one of the most-anticipated matches of the opening weekend. However, the London club have seemingly sought to capitalise on that interest by raising prices.

“To watch Fulham in action against West London rivals Queens Park Rangers last season was at most £50 for a match day ticket in the Johnny Haynes stand,” writes Jake Polden. “The Riverside, which today boasts a plush corporate section, was still under development.

“To watch Fulham take on Liverpool in the same seat this season will cost you £90 – and you can expect to pay a tenner more to watch the action from the other side of the pitch in the Riverside, where match day tickets are now £100.”

Woodburn represents warning to signings

Success stories at Liverpool have been plentiful in recent years, so when a player doesn’t live up to their potential it is a surprise.

Ben Woodburn signed his first professional contract with Liverpool on the same day as Trent Alexander-Arnold in 2016 and went on to make history. Later the same season, he became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer, netting in the League Cup quarter-final against Leeds to break Michael Owen’s record.

However, while Alexander-Arnold has kicked on to become one of the elite full-backs in the game, Woodburn has failed to build on the early momentum accrued in his career.

He has now left Liverpool after the expiration of his contract and, upon saying farewell to the Reds on social media, Alexander-Arnold responded with the message “my brother what a journey.”
