Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp on Darwin Nunez “love” as forward receives Mohamed Salah advice

Although it may still be four weeks until the Premier League season begins, those who follow Liverpool will start to get a feel of what their revamped forward line will look like in the coming weeks.

The Reds will need to cope without Sadio Mane for the first time in six years, as the Senegal forward left the club to join Bayern Munich. It means £85 million man Darwin Nunez will likely lead the atta, with January signing Luis Diaz on the left and Mohamed Salah on the right, having recently agreed a new contract.

With their first pre-season fixture against Manchester United to come on Tuesday from Thailand, it will be intriguing to see what XI is selected by manager Jurgen Klopp with Nunez set to be the main focus after turning down the Red Devils to move to Merseyside.

Klopp reveals ‘love’ for Nunez

Klopp has spoken glowingly about Nunez, as he gears up for the forward to join up with the senior squad.

The Reds played against the Uruguayan in the Champions League last season and he netted for Benfica in Lisbon and then at Anfield. It would appear he left a big impression on Klopp in those matches and the Liverpool boss has detailed the specific plans that were made to deal with him.

“It was massively impressive when he played in front of us,” he said. “When you prepare Benfica, you know up to the size of shoes – we know absolutely everything about an opponent, so we know exactly about the quality of Darwin.

“The power and the mix-up with technique, the desire, smart moves, the problems he caused us. We fell all in love in these two games.

“A very aggressive South American, it’s a good thing! It was really a joy to watch him and so when we realised we had a good chance to sign him, we were all-in and we’re really happy he’s here now.”

Nunez sent Reds advice

Former Liverpool midfielder Stewart Downing has backed Nunez to follow in the footsteps of Mohamed Salah and Mane at Anfied by hitting the ground running.

The Uruguayan will be under a lot of pressure to perform given his potential club-record cost. The Premier League is a notoriously difficult division to settle in too, especially given Nunez is new to the culture and still just 22 years old.

However, Downing thinks a fast start will quickly endear the striker to his new supporters in a manner similar to two of the club’s modern-day legends.

“I think he will be a fans’ favourite, just the way he plays, 100 per cent the fans will love that and it will be nice if he gets a couple of goals early on, especially at Anfield to get his confidence up,” he said.

“That’s what happened with Salah and Mane, they got off to good starts and their careers took off and you hope he does well. He looks like a fantastic player from what I have seen.”

Klopp on Carvalho

Given he may cost £85 million, it’s understandable that there is so much focus on Nunez. But Liverpool may have made another savvy signing in the form of Fabio Carvalho.

The young midfielder shone for Fulham last season as they breezed to the Championship title, with his eye for a pass and composure in front of goal both belying his 19 years.

Klopp is also clearly keen to see what the teenager can offer this season and has highlighted his versatility to play in different positions as a crucial quality in his armoury.

“When we watched him it was a pure joy to watch him, absolutely,” he said. “He can play so many different positions for us, the way we play. At the minute he’s not really set on one position – it’s the wing, it’s the eight, it’s the 10, it’s the false nine if he grows a few more muscles.

“It’s a short-term and a long-term project; he can start tomorrow and he needs to adapt, you can see that a little bit, but when he has the ball that’s proper quality. I’m over the moon that he’s here. Fantastic prospect.”
