Liverpool news: Jurgen Klopp’s private comment emerges amid Darwin Nunez transfer details

After coming so close to winning all four trophies last season, Liverpool show no signs of resting on their laurels.

Although Sadio Mane looks increasingly likely to move on to Bayern Munich, Benfica’s Darwin Nunez will come in in a potential club-record £85 million deal. After Manchester City confirmed the signing of Erling Haaland on Monday, both of the Premier League’s apex outfits will have new superstars leading the line.

For Liverpool supporters, it will be sad to see a modern-day legend depart in Mane, although the recent arrivals of Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and Nunez point towards the start of an exciting new era for Jurgen Klopp’s side. Mirror Sport has the latest Liverpool headlines.

Nunez details emerge

After Benfica confirmed that a deal had been agreed between them and Liverpool for Nunez, details about the potential add-ons in the transfer have emerged.

According to reports in Portugal, the agreement will see Benfica receive £64.2million (€75m) up front from the Reds, but that there are £21.5million (€25m) in add-ons that Nunez should be able to reach.

The remaining amount of £8.6 million will depend on how well the Uruguay international performs, meaning Liverpool could end up shelling out £85.5 million for the player in total.

The deal has drawn some comparisons with Bayern’s offer for Mane, with the German giants said to have put forward £30 million and a potential £4.2 million in further bonuses.

Klopp private comment to Nunez

Benfica midfielder Adel Taarabt has said Klopp made an encouraging comment about Nunez when the two teams met in the Champions League last season.

Liverpool got past Benfica in the quarter-finals of the competition, although the Uruguayan impressed in both legs – scoring in Lisbon in a 3-1 defeat for his team and then again at Anfield in a 3-3 draw.

Taarabt has revealed that even at that point, Klopp was a big admirer of the forward and made no secret in letting him know as much.

“He [Nunez] was fantastic in those two games,” said the Benfica midfielder. “In the second leg, when he scored, [Klopp] came up to him and said ‘What a player’. Liverpool had already come to get Luis Diaz from FC Porto, you can see how good he was.”

Haaland predicted to outscore Nunez

Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has backed Nunez to fare well in the Premier League, but believes new Manchester City sharpshooter Erling Haaland will outscore him.

City played for long spells last season without a recognised centre-forward on their way to the league title. They have filled that void emphatically with the addition of the Norway international though, who is regarded by many as the best young striker on the planet.

When asked about the two Premier League newcomers, Sutton suggested the City man will hit the ground running quicker.

“I think Haaland is the real deal,” the ex-Blackburn star explained. “I think Nunez is good. But Haaland, he is unplayable.

“…I like him (Nunez), saw him in the Champions League. He’s a good centre-forward and good in the air. Liverpool may have lacked a central striker that’s good in the air. Finishes off well with both feet. Likes to come off that left-hand side. I think they have signed a really good player.”
