Liverpool news: Mohamed Salah contract insight as Jurgen Klopp laments Thiago critics

In what is undoubtedly going to be a stressful end to the season, Liverpool supporters will be able to take some time out to enjoy the ride this week.

The Reds swept aside an abysmal Manchester United outfit on Tuesday, embarrassing one of their two historical rivals. On Sunday at Anfield, they will have the chance to exert similar misery on the other in Everton.

Manchester City are in action a day earlier and have a similarly straightforward-looking task against Watford. So, while it appears unlikely much will change in the title picture, an emphatic Merseyside derby win could help the Reds add to their already substantial positive momentum.

Mirror Sport has your latest headlines ahead of the encounter as Liverpool look to plunge the relegation-threatened Toffees deeper into the mire.

Salah contract update

Mohamed Salah has said the reason for the delay in agreeing a contract extension with Liverpool is not solely financial.

The Egyptian forward has yet to extend his deal at Anfield, with his current terms set to expire at the end of next season. While Reds supporters have treasured his immaculate displays in the current campaign, there is an undercurrent of concern that he may move on.

Although the salary Salah reportedly wants has long been mentioned as the sticking point in negotiations, according to the man himself that is not the case. “I don’t know, I have one year left,” he said. “I think the fans know what I want, but in the contract, it’s not everything about the money at all. So I don’t know, I can’t tell you exactly. I have one year left and the fans know what I want.”

Klopp recalls Thiago criticism

Klopp has laughed off previous suggestions made by pundits that Thiago Alcantara was not suited to the team’s style of play.

After an up and down start to his Liverpool career, the Spain international has blossomed in recent weeks. He was excellent in the Reds’ recent wins over Manchester City and Manchester United, adding an incisive edge to the hub of the team.

Klopp was asked about the midfielder’s recent form in his press conference on Friday and said the player himself always knew he’d thrive at Anfield.

“People were questioning if he suits our football? Thank God these people don’t make decisions,” he said. “It is more important Thiago wanted to join us and he knew how we played. He is a real football person and thinks a lot about football. He knew how we played, and he knew he would fit in and we knew it as well.”

Rooney makes title prediction

Former Everton and Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney has admitted he would rather Manchester City won the title over Liverpool, but he thinks the Reds will get over the line.

Going into the weekend fixtures, City lead the way by one point. Given the relentless pace being set by both teams, any kind of slip up from either side feels like it will be costly.

The Derby County boss has said he expects a misstep to come from Pep Guardiola’s side, although not necessarily from Klopp’s. “I’d prefer none of them but obviously one of them is,” he said. “I think Liverpool might nick it.

“I think they’ve really looked strong over the last few months and I think winning the FA Cup semi-final could have an impact on that. So I’ve just got a feeling that Liverpool might nick it. I hope not – I’d rather City win it.”
