Sadio Mane had a private phone call with Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp before signing for the Reds.
The Senegal international’s time at Anfield looks set to draw to a close after he agreed terms with German outfit Bayern Munich over a £35.1million move last week. But he only agreed to move to Liverpool, and snub their bitter rivals Manchester United, after he “forgave” Klopp in a private chat ahead of joining from Southampton.
It comes as the Egypt national team doctor has given an update on the fitness of Mohamed Salah. And Takumi Minamino’s next club has emerged as the Reds also make their decision over Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s future.
Here are Mirror Football’s latest Liverpool headlines.
Mane’s phone call with Klopp
Sadio Mane was “really close to going to Manchester United” but a private phone call with Jurgen Klopp convinced him to sign for Liverpool.
The Senegal star has since admitted the move to Old Trafford was “all agreed” before Klopp intervened. But the Reds boss had to issue Mane a grovelling apology – for not succeeding in bringing him to Borussia Dortmund earlier in his career.
But everything worked out well, with Mane saying he “forgave” Klopp on the spot, and agreed terms on his move to Liverpool.
Salah update given
The national team medic says Salah’s injury took place during the FA Cup final win against Chelsea “in the adductor muscles” of the Liverpool ace. He added that Egypt were told the player needed an X-ray when he reported for international duty, although the Reds allowed him to take part in one game – against Guinea.
Minamino’s next club emerges
Takumi Minamino appears set to join French outfit AS Monaco this summer as his time at Liverpool comes to an end.
The Japan international is expected to leave the Anfield outfit this summer and has been the subject of interest from Ligue 1 club Lyon and also Serie A outfit Atalanta. But Monaco are now the favourites to land his signature, in a move that could have consequences for newly-engaged Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
It is now unlikely that Jurgen Klopp will allow Oxlade-Chamberlain to leave the club following the Reds failure to land another midfielder this summer.
