Liverpool news: Robert Lewandowski comments revisited as Ibrahima Konate earns call-up

Although the Champions League final was over a week ago, the fallout from Paris is still rumbling on for Liverpool and their supporters.

After the chaotic scenes outside the Stade de France last Saturday, UEFA finally issued an apology to supporters of both the Reds and Real Madrid on Friday night. It will now be intriguing to see if French authorities follow suit, as they have foisted some blame on fans in the aftermath.

On the field, the Reds continue to be linked with potential incomings and outgoings too, although the transfer business across European football has yet to fully click into gear with internationals ongoing.

Mirror Sport has all of the latest news about Jurgen Klopp’s double-winning team.

What player would be best suited to replace Sadio Mane at Anfield? Let us know in the comments section below!

Klopp’s Lewandowski comments recalled

With Sadio Mane seemingly set on leaving Liverpool to join Bayern Munich this summer, there’s no doubt the Reds will need to strengthen their forward line.

One player who is set to be on the market – albeit he is a stylistically different option to Mane – is Robert Lewandowski, with the forward having said he thinks his time with the German giants is up.

Klopp and Lewandowski worked together at Borussia Dortmund and it was under the Reds manager when the Poland international developed into one of the world’s best strikers. Last year, Klopp remembered their time together fondly.

“It actually won’t be fair to say that about any other player except Lewy,” he said when asked about the greatest player he coached. ” What he has made out of his potential, how he pushed himself to become the player he is today, that’s extraordinary. Lewy took every step he needed to take to be that goal machine.”

Konate call up

Ibrahima Konate has been recognised for his excellent form Liverpool, as he’s earned a maiden call up to the senior France team.

The world champions have had to draft in another centre-back after Manchester United’s Raphael Varane suffered an injury.

Given how Konate has forced himself into contention at Liverpool – he started the Champions League final ahead of the excellent Joel Matip – there was some surprise when he wasn’t named in Didier Deschamps’ initial squad for the upcoming fixtures. However, he will now get the chance to show what he’s capable of for Les Bleus.

France would potentially benefit from some defensive stability too, as they suffered a shock 2-1 loss in their last outing at home to Denmark.

Alexander-Arnold audition

England manager Gareth Southgate has spoken about the importance of Trent Alexander-Arnold getting the rest he needs after a busy season.

The Liverpool full-back joined up with the Three Lions on the back of Champions League heartbreak and is set to be involved in the team’s upcoming couple of fixtures before embarking on a holiday.

England faced Hungary on Saturday and will be in action again on Tuesday in Germany in the UEFA Nations League. Southgate believes Alexander-Arnold and his Liverpool team-mate Jordan Henderson have been given a confidence jolt from the Liverpool supporters.

“I have to say he has taken great heart from the parade,” he said. “I think that was a significant lift for him and the rest of the team. Of course they were disappointed to lose the final but I think the connection they had with the fans that day has definitely been important for him and has allowed the whole team to move on.

“They weren’t sure it was the right thing but now they’ve done it, they absolutely recognise that it was, so I think that was a lovely moment for all of them.”
