Man Utd agree Tyrell Malacia transfer after hijacking rivals for last-minute agreement

Manchester United have sealed a £14million deal to land Feyenoord defender Tyrell Malacia.

United, who are also closing in on a £56million agreement with Barcelona for Frenkie de Jong, have lodged an official bid with the Rotterdam club that has been accepted.

Lyon looked to be in pole position last week when they tabled a third offer worth £12million – as well as a package of add-ons. But United have now agreed to get close to Feyenoord’s asking price of £15million – and the 22-year-old left-back now appears to be bound for Old Trafford.

New United boss Erik ten Hag identified Malacia as a potential signing after agreeing to leave Ajax. Newcastle were also interested in the Dutch international.

And Lyon appeared to have stolen a march on both Premier League clubs by increasing their offer. But United’s mission to sign new players is now cranking into gear after a quiet start to the transfer window.

Ten Hag wants competition for Luke Shaw – but United were concentrating their efforts on securing De Jong first. Malacia has been described as a “pit-bull” in Holland but has an unassuming personality off the pitch.

He comes from the same Rotterdam streets that produced Gini Wijnaldum, the Paris St Germain midfielder who was a big success with both Newcastle and Liverpool. Malacia is expected to be part of Louis van Gaal’s squad for the World Cup in the winter.

He made his international debut in a qualifier against Montenegro last September and has now collected five caps for his country.
