Man Utd news: Frenkie de Jong told transfer decision as Erik ten Hag has first big issue

Frenkie de Jong has been informed of Barcelona’s decision to sell him to Manchester United.

The Dutch midfielder’s protracted transfer saga may finally be coming to a close after his club boss Xavi Hernandez phoned him to tell him the club would be selling him. But the former Ajax midfielder has reportedly not been left very happy over how the Spanish giants have treated him.

It comes as Erik ten Hag has been handed his first big problem as Manchester United boss by first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea. And Tyrell Malacia has made his debut for the Red Devils in the pre-season friendly against Liverpool in Thailand, and was rather impressive as well.

De Jong told of transfer decision

Frenkie de Jong has reportedly been left “disgusted” over his treatment by Barcelona this summer after boss Xavi Hernandez phoned him to say the club has decided to sell him to Manchester United.

The Dutchman returned for pre-season training on Monday, but reports coming out of Spain suggest his Barcelona boss Xavi phoned him just hours later after an agreement was struck with United over a transfer fee for the midfielder. It is claimed that De Jong has been left upset over how Barcelona have treated him, and he is said to have been left isolated in the negotiation process.

A total transfer fee of around £72million has now been agreed between the two clubs after United transfer chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough jetted to the Catalan capital to conclude negotiations. And it now appears to be up to the Red Devils to come to an agreement with De Jong over terms.

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been handed his first big problem at the club by first-choice goalkeeper David de Gea.

The United number one was between the sticks for the pre-season friendly against Liverpool on Monday but was replaced by back-up shot-stopper Tom Heaton mid-way through the second half. The Spaniard appeared to pick up some sort of injury when rushing out for the ball, which could leave Ten Hag with something of a headache.

After the new Red Devils boss signed off on the loan departure of Dean Henderson to Nottingham Forest earlier this summer, he’s now looking a little light in a vital position.

Malacia makes debut

Manchester United new boy Tyrell Malacia has made his first appearance for the club.

Malacia was introduced at half-time as Erik ten Hag chose to make big changes to his side. The new United left-back looks to be ready to prove Ten Hag’s prediction about his ability to “close the right area” and “take part in the offensive side of our game”.

His defensive ability was on full display from the off as he went toe-to-toe with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain before also impressing when Mohamed Salah came on. And it looks as though he could fit in to Erik ten Hag’s new philosophy straight away.
