Man Utd news: Frenkie de Jong transfer snub questioned amid Harry Maguire’s ‘harsh reality’

Manchester United are in high spirits following the recent turnaround to their season under Erik ten Hag but are patiently awaiting their return to action following postponed fixtures and the current international break.

In the meantime, however, Netherlands manager Louis Van Gaal has questioned Frenkie de Jong’s transfer snub of the Red Devils over the summer, while Harry Maguire faces a ‘harsh reality’ after being dropped from the squad. Elsewhere, Bruno Fernandes has made a telling Erik ten Hag comparison to Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

Frenkie de Jong transfer snub questioned

Former Man United boss Van Gaal has appeared to question De Jong’s decision to stay at Barcelona amid interest from the Red Devils, following the longest-running transfer saga of the summer window ultimately ending with the Dutch international remaining at the Camp Nou.

De Jong is Barca’s highest-paid player but does not command a starting place in Xavi Hernandez’s side and Netherlands boss Van Gaal, speaking just two months ahead of the World Cup kicking off in Qatar, has now suggested that the star has made an error by staying at a club where he would not be a regular starter this campaign.

Van Gaal said at a press conference on Tuesday: “It’s true that many players called me in the transfer window. But I always ended every conversation with: ‘This is my advice, but you make your own decision. I am happy with the outcome. But I would be happier if Frenkie and Memphis would play more than they are now.”

Harry Maguire faces ‘harsh reality’

Out-of-favour Man United captain Maguire has reportedly grown frustrated with David de Gea as he continues to be left on the bench by Ten Hag, having not started a Premier League game since United were hammered 4-0 by Brentford in their second game of the season.

While Maguire accepts some responsibility for his poor form over recent seasons, he is also privately critical of some of his team-mates. According to ESPN, the Englishman feels he ‘hasn’t been helped’ by the coaches and players around him.

Some of those ‘frustrations’ have been aimed in particular at United goalkeeper De Gea, who has retained his place since Ten Hag took charge. It is stated that Maguire has become annoyed with the Spaniard’s lack of communication and reluctance to defend further from his goal-line.

Bruno Fernandes makes Erik ten Hag comparison

Man United midfielder Fernandes has compared Ten Hag’s authoritarian approach to management to that of Guardiola and Klopp with the Dutchman having staged an impressive turnaround in fortunes at Old Trafford.

A huge reason behind that, according to Fernandes, has been the former Ajax schemer’s approach to discipline. As quoted by The Athletic, the Portuguese playmaker said: “First of all, he has an idea. He has a style. You have to follow his rules. He is strict on that. And I like that. He has brought discipline, which is something I think we missed in the past.

“Everyone must be on the same page. That is what Pep (Guardiola) and (Jurgen) Klopp have been doing for years, because they have stability in the club and in the way they choose the transfer market and build the team, which is really important for them to get the rewards.”
