Man Utd news: Update given on injured duo amid Erik Ten Hag transfer setback

Manchester United will have been out of Premier League action for 28 days by the time they face Manchester City on October 2 but Erik ten Hag is hoping to have used the time wisely to nurse some of his injured stars back to full fitness.

Anthony Martial, who shone in pre-season, has featured just once this campaign but is set to remain out for the foreseeable future, although more positive news has come for Marcus Rashford as he prepares to return for the Manchester derby. Elsewhere, Ten Hag has received a transfer setback as he disagrees with club chiefs over January window plans.

Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest stories coming out of Old Trafford.

United give updates on injured duo

United top goalscorer Rashford could be fit for the derby against Man City at the beginning of next month, according to reports, having missed the last two games after picking up a muscle injury in the 3-1 win over Arsenal two weeks ago.

But ESPN are now reporting that the Red Devils are hopeful of having the 24-year-old available for the clash against Pep Guardiola’s side on October 2, who had scored three goals across his last four appearances prior to his injury, with club medical staff said to believe the injury is not serious and the forward could rejoin training as early as next week.

But while news around Rashford is positive, United officials are being more cautious with Martial who has been out of action since August as a result of an achilles injury that can become problematic if not allowed to rest, which was a point affirmed last week by injury expert Dinnery who regularly contributes to Sky Sports.

Ten Hag suffers transfer setback

Man United boss Ten Hag is likely to be frustrated by club officials over transfer spend despite being keen to add to his squad in January, following a summer transfer window that saw six new incomings at Old Trafford.

The Dutch boss is already reaping the rewards from the summer arrivals of Tyrell Malacia, Lisandro Martinez, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Antony and Martin Dubravka, although there is an awareness among Ten Hag and his staff that his squad will need further additions if they want to continue to close the gap to the best side’s in the Premier League and in Europe.

As outlined by The Athletic, however, United are unwilling to spend further in January after overseeing a greater spend than anticipated this summer and club policy at United has been against making moves in January due to the nature of the market, valuation of players and difficulty of concluding deals.

Hostile bid to remove Glazers ‘moving forward’

The potential sale of Man United is “moving forward”, according to former club director Michael Knighton, with the Glazers encouraged to sell up amid growing fan hostility and recent protests.

Failings on the field and mismanagement off it has seen the club’s Americans owners face huge pressure to go, although they have stood firm so far. Knighton is, once again, a figure in a potential sale of the Manchester club, after making his interest clear last month, and he has now claimed progress is being made behind the scenes in a message to fans on social media.

He wrote: “Thank you ALL for the wonderful messages of support. There is much going on behind the scenes. Things are moving forward as planned. I apologise I can’t be on this platform more, just bogged down in meetings. God bless & every good wish to all of you. Your support is greatly appreciated.”
