EXCLUSIVE: Evra “hurt” over United’s Conte snub

Patrice Evra admits his heart is “hurt” by Antonio Conte’s impressive impact at Spurs – instead of Manchester United.

The five-time Premier League winner, who also lifted three League Cups and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, played under Conte at Juventus.

He believes the Italian multiple title winner is on course to finally turn Spurs into a Premier League superpower.

“It hurts my heart,” he said. “Because I think Conte, Klopp, Guardiola – all those managers are the best in the world right now and we could have had him at Manchester United.

“But some people at the club, they said: ‘It’s not our style, it’s not what we’re looking for’.”

Antony compared to Neymar and Vinicius Jr

Manchester United transfer target Antony has been compared to Paris Saint-Germain superstar Neymar and Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jr by Brazil boss Tite.

Erik ten Hag wants to reunite with the Ajax winger, 22, at Old Trafford and Red Devils chiefs are believed to be in negotiations over a potential deal.

Tite has given Antony a glowing review to boost United’s confidence, having been asked whether Neymar was still the ‘technical leader’ in his squad.

“Yes absolutely,” the Selecao manager replied. “Especially now, to share the professionalism with a series of athletes with his characteristic. Antony has that characteristic, Raphinha too, Vinicius, Rodrygo does, too.”

United ‘shortlist’ ex-Liverpool chief

Manchester United are reportedly plotting an audacious move for the man behind so much of Liverpool ’s recent success, Michael Edwards.

In the last 12 months, the Red Devils have commenced a radical overhaul of their structure behind the scenes, amid their longest trophy drought in a generation. Former chief executive Ed Woodward has borne the brunt of United fans’ frustrations for the last decade, overseeing a period of decline at Old Trafford.

Woodward was said to have had a controlling hand in recruitment, with United wasting upwards of a billion pounds since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013. He has now left the club, with Richard Arnold taking his place as CEO, John Murtough appointed as the club’s first Football Director and Darren Fletcher named Technical Director

City making moves amid United malaise

Manchester City are bidding to follow up on the signings of Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez by adding Marc Cucurella to their star-studded squad.

Multiple reports claim that the Citizens have agreed personal terms with the 23-year-old defender, who enjoyed an outstanding season with Brighton & Hove Albion.

It’s another reminder to United that they need to get their transfer business started soon.

United set Martial price

Manchester United are reportedly open to offers of just £20million for Anthony Martial – but accept even that fee may deter suitors.

Signed for an initial £36million from Monaco back in 2015, the Frenchman was expected to lead the line for United into a new era. But six years on from that signature with his career having plateaued, Old Trafford bosses are left scratching their heads on how best to recoup some of their outlay.

Erik ten Hag has insisted that every player will have a clean slate in the early months of his tenure and Martial will likely be given a chance to impress at Carrington. But that could be an opportunity of necessity as much as anything else, with the market for Martial narrow at best.

Ronaldo ‘offered’ Juventus return

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo could be offered the chance of a sensational return to Juventus after his agent Jorge Mendes reportedly offered the Portuguese back to the Italian giants.

The former Real Madrid forward only departed the Juventus Stadium last summer as he made an emotional return to Old Trafford. Despite a successful season from a personal point of view – Ronaldo having found the net on 24 occasions throughout the campaign – the Red Devils endured a thoroughly miserable time of things.

They could only stumble to a sixth-placed finish under the tutelage of Ralf Rangnick with the season being their worst in Premier League history from a points perspective. In the meantime, the forward himself has worries over the club’s lack of transfer business and could be set to pursue an exit should the situation fail to improve.

No move for Ebiowei

The English winger, 18, is instead set to sign for Crystal Palace, having signed a five-year contract and completed a medical.

Benfica ‘win race’ for United target

Benfica appear to have pipped Manchester United and Premier League colleagues Wolves to the signing of River Plate star Enzo Fernandez.

The Argentine midfielder, 21, had been linked with moves to both Old Trafford and Molinuex, but reports from Portugal, via Sport Witness, claim that Benfica have reached an agreement with River Plate for a deal worth £15.5 million with a 25 per cent sell-on clause.

Flamengo not giving up on Pereira

Manchester United might still be able to sell Andreas Pereira to Flamengo this summer after an inital deal to turn his loan spell into a permanent stay collapsed.

The 26-year-old remains wanted by the Brazilian giants, as vice-president Marcos Braz told ESPN Brasil: “Three months ago it was widely reported that Flamengo had closed with Andreas. A month later they said that Flamengo had dropped Andreas. And that’s not it. Flamengo is still looking for an alternative for the player to stay here.

“It’s very difficult, a very complex situation. He is a young player, who has a lot of market, and from a financially powerful club. So when you go to discuss some terms, you have limits to advance on this topic, but Flamengo still works for the maintenance of the player’.”

Five players who can leave

It’s been a more frustrating start to life at Manchester United than new manager Erik ten Hag would have hoped for.

Many of his United squad return from pre-season next week, and the Dutchman would have ideally liked to have had at least a couple of new arrivals joining them, but that at present seems unlikely.

The club have of course identified several targets – including Barcelona ’s Frenkie de Jong – however it seems a deal for him and others are still some way off from being completed.

But while there are more questions than answers when it comes to potential incomings at the club, the plan in terms of outgoings does at least seem to be more clear.

Ten Hag receives major Eriksen boost

Manchester United appear to be in pole position to sign Christian Eriksen thanks to Tottenham Hotspur’s decision to pull out of the race.

New Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag wants to make the 30-year-old his first signingamidst a difficult start to his maiden summer transfer window at Old Trafford. Last week, United have offered Eriksen a deal to leave Brentford when his contract with the Bees expires on June 30.

Ten Hag has now been handed a major boost in his efforts, as the Daily Star report that Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has backed down in his bid to reunite with the midfielder

Ex-Man Utd strikers could link-up

Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani could link up with Radamel Falcao next season after the Uruguayan’s contract at Old Trafford expired.

A number of clubs in Europe have enquired about taking the 35-year-old while Argentine giants Boca Juniors have also been in the running to land his signature. He is now a free agent and on the lookout for a new club – with La Liga thought to be his favoured destination.

The experienced striker is hopeful of playing regularly for a club in Europe’s top five leagues as he wants to still be operating at the top level ahead of this winter’s World Cup finals in Qatar. The veteran striker still plays an important role for Uruguay and this year is likely to be his last World Cup appearance.

How Man Utd stopped Chelsea signing Rooney

It’s been revealed that Manchester United went to extreme lengths to keep Wayne Rooney out of the clutches of Chelsea back in 2014 – and they even managed to wrap up a deal for Juan Mata without speaking to their Premier League rivals at the same time.

United shelled out around £37.1million to bring Mata to Old Trafford after the Spanish maestro had fallen out of favour with then-Blues boss Jose Mourinho. However, a deal to sign the playmaker was anything but straightforward given Chelsea’s interest in striking a deal for Rooney.

A new report from The Athletic has shed some light on how United managed to pull it off. The club were wary of the Blues interest in Rooney and, as such, former chief executive Ed Woodward was reluctant to take any calls or sit around the negotiating table with the Chelsea hierarchy.

Mkhitaryan heading to Inter

Former Manchester United star Henrikh Mkhitaryan is on the verge of joining Inter Milan, according to Sky in Italy.

The 33-year-old will be available on a free transfer when his Roma contract expires this month.

Ten Hag overlooking Man Utd issue

Manchester United appear to be devoting the majority of their time, effort and resources to trying to persuade Frenkie de Jong to join the Red Devils from FC Barcelona this summer.

Efforts to convince Barcelona to sell and the Netherlands international to leave have so far failed to deliver United’s desired outcome. Whilst talks are ongoing, De Jong hardly inspired confidence when he addressed rumours earlier this month.

Asked what he made of United’s intense interest, the ex-Ajax midfielder explained: “You’re always flattered when teams show interest in you as a player but I am at the biggest club in the world at the moment and I feel fine there, so no news.”

The comments would have made for unwelcome reading from a United viewpoint, but it also may offer the chance for the club’s fans and hierarchy alike to look at the rest of the summer transfer window with some perspective. As talented as De Jong is, there is the glaring issue that he doesn’t actually solve United’s most obvious issue.

Man Utd’s post-Fergie midfielders

When Erik ten Hag arrived at Manchester United he immediately identified central midfield as his priority for the summer transfer window.

That is hardly surprising, considering the exodus which is about to occur. At the end of June, United will lose Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata on free transfers when their contracts expire.

Their departures, plus the poor form of others in that position over the miserable 2021/22 season, means new additions are a must in midfield.

Ronaldo ‘worried’ by Man Utd transfers

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly ‘worried’ by Manchester United’s lack of activity in the summer transfer market so far.

United finished in sixth spot last season and a whopping 11 points off fifth place while, unlike those sides who finished above them in the standings, are yet to make any moves in the transfer market following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as their new boss.

Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong is United’s prime summer transfer target and he held a phone call recently with Ten Hag during which the new United manager outlined the role the player would enjoy under him as part of a charm offensive.

Reports this weekend outlined how the midfielder has already cleared out his locker at Barca with a move appearing to edge closer.

Arsenal and Chelsea join Rabiot hunt

Arsenal are targeting a swap deal for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot as Mikel Arteta attempts to continue the Gunners’ swift business this summer, according to reports in Italy.

The North Londoners have already signed off two incoming deals, with the additions not expected to stop there. Brazilian youngster Marquinhos has arrived from Sao Paulo, whilst Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira was signed for a £34million fee earlier this week.

Man Utd closing in defender

Manchester United are close to signing Tottenham left-back Jayden Meghoma, according to CaughOffside.

The 15-year-old has been described as one of the best European left-backs in his age bracket.

Man Utd’s De Jong problem

Manchester United are hopeful of making five signings this summer but other deals are being held up by prolonged negotiations to prise Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.

De Jong, 25, is a top transfer priority for Erik ten Hag and the pair held a phone call during which the new United manager outlined the role the player would enjoy under him as part of a charm offensive. Reports this weekend outlined how the midfielder has already cleared out his locker at Barca with a move appearing to edge closer.

The Dutchman is said to have received assurances that the entire team would revolve around him as the major reference point in midfield. He would be the ‘conductor of the orchestra’ and would be an undisputed starter under Ten Hag – a similar role to the one he enjoyed so much at Ajax.

Ronaldo vows to pay for damage

A dog was left “shaking with fear” when a supercar owned by Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo crashed into a property in Majorca on Monday morning.

The Portugal captain, 37, was not driving the Bugatti Veyron – valued at £1.8million – when the incident happened. He is currently enjoying a holiday with his family on the Balearic Island before reporting back for pre-season at United’s Carrington training ground.

Ronaldo has pledged to pay the homeowner, who remains anonymous, for the damage caused. The Majorcan local turned up at the footballer’s rented mansion on Tuesday to speak to him about the incident after fearing his dog had been killed.

Brentford not giving up on Eriksen

Brentford remain hopeful Christian Eriksen will stay in west London, according to 90min.

The Denmark international, 30, is set to become a free agent when his contract expires this month.

Manchester United and Tottenham are interested in signing Eriksen.

Timber’s agent in Manchester

Manchester United might have fresh hope of completing a deal for Ajax starlet Jurrien Timber after all with his agent in Manchester.

The Red Devils have been linked with a swoop for the versatile young defender for the majority of the summer, with new boss Erik ten Hag understood to be a huge fan.

However, the Dutchman’s initial attempts to tempt Timber to Old Trafford looked to be ending in frustration.

It was suggested that Timber was not convinced of a transfer to United, with doubts over his place in the Netherlands national side should he fail to earn a role in the first-team should a summer move be completed.

Ten Hag’s transfer problem

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag may have to be selective over which Ajax star he signs this summer with the Dutch side being stubborn over summer sales.

The Red Devils have been linked with a number of Ten Hag’s former players following his switch to Old Trafford in the summer. Chief among those have been the likes of Brazilian winger Antony – reports suggesting that the club have sent a delegation over to Amsterdam in an attempt to negotiate a deal.

Meanwhile, Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez has also emerged as a target for United with the club keen to bolster their leaky defence but other interest from Arsenal has made a move slightly problematic.

Rashford and Martial set to stay

Erik ten Hag is expecting Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to be in his squad next season, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Rashford, 24, has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford as he has one year left on his contract, although the club have the option to extend this for another year and he remains in Ten Hag’s plans.

Meanwhile, Martial, 26, spent the second half of last season on loan with Sevilla and failed to make a significant impact. This means there is a lack of interest in his services, meaning the Frenchman is set to stay put.

Man Utd’s transfer scenarios – from best to worst

Erik ten Hag arrived at Manchester tasked with a rebuild following a poor season that saw them finish sixth in the Premier League.

But, four weeks after being unveiled, no new signings have arrived, which is less than ideal. Couple that with several notable departures and suddenly United’s squad looks even more underpowered with pre-season creeping up upon the Dutch manager.

As it stands he will be working purely with players he has inherited – many of whom have been subjected to major criticism with some suggesting they aren’t up to scratch. Ten Hag certainly has his targets, in fact he’s told club chiefs he wants five signings this summer, but securing them has been the bigger problem as the club’s history of being less than stellar in the market continues to bear fruit.

That could yet prove problematic with a reduction in time often leading to an increase in desperation – which, as fans will know all too well, is nothing new at Old Trafford. Ten Hag’s squad needs reinforcements in almost every area and it may be a case of prioritising this summer.

The club could still strike gold in the market, although their negotiations thus far suggest that won’t be the case. It means they may have to explore other avenues which means they end up with targets who were far from first choice. As a result Mirror Football has taken a look at who Ten Hag’s five signings could be – from the very best scenario to a doomsday one.
