Lindelof has no issues with Martinez pursuit

Victor Lindelof is not concerned by Manchester United ‘s move for Lisandro Martinez, which could hamper his own ambitions at Old Trafford.

Ten Hag vetoed signing

Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag overruled the club’s recruitment department over the signing of a new central defender this summer.

United had identified Villarreal defender Pau Torres as their primary defensive target this summer with the deal said to be ‘discussed and negotiated’ with the player’s representatives, who were planning to go to England to wrap up the transfer.

However, Ten Hag put the brakes on the deal by instead insisting that United move to sign versatile defender Lisandro Martinez from Ajax.

Scott impressed with new vision

Scott McTominay has been impressed with the way Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff have got their message across.

The new Manchester United boss has inherited a squad, bereft of confidence, which finished sixth last term. He’s tasked with turning around their fortunes and was hired in the summer ahead of the likes of Mauricio Pochettino. Ten Hag has wasted no time in making it clear what he expects.

And McTominay is buying into what the Dutchman wants from the playing group and has expressed optimism ahead of the season opener against Brighton and Hove Albion. United, who have jetted off for their pre-season tour, welcomed Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag as Ten Hag’s assistants and they’ve made a positive impression.

Yorke offers Ten Hag advice on Rashford

by David McDonnell

Erik ten Hag needs to make Marcus Rashford feel loved again if the Manchester United striker is to rediscover his form and confidence.

Rashford endured a miserable time last season, scoring just five goals in 32 appearances for United, his loss of form and belief culminating in him losing his England place.

But former United striker Dwight Yorke believes Rashford can get back to his best under new boss ten Hag – but only if the Dutchman handles the 24-year-old in the right way.

Ronaldo sister posts cryptic message

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister, Katia Aveiro, has posted a cryptic message on Instagram regarding her brother’s future at Manchester United.

Ronaldo is determined to depart Old Trafford this summer and he has not reported to the club’s pre-season tour of Asia due to ‘family reasons’. The 37-year-old only returned to United last year, sealing an emotional £20million return to the club from Juventus.

In a fresh development, Ronaldo’s sister was asked by an Instagram user “Cristiano will stay [in] Manchester?” Katia Aveiro replied, as translated by the Manchester Evening News : “I suggest some glasses… a span of brain or else learn to read haaa and notion.” While the response is not clear, it has been suggested that she is telling the user to read the room as the situation should be obvious.

Phelan removed from coaching staff

Manchester United have removed Mike Phelan from the first-team coaching staff although he remains contracted to the club.

The club’s continuing off-field changes will include Phelan not serving as a first-team coach for the upcoming campaign. The news comes after interim coach Ralf Rangnick departed Old Trafford – not fulfilling his previously agreed two-year consultancy role – while the German’s coaches – including Chris Armas, Ewan Sharp and Sascha Lense – have also exited.

Phelan, 59, returned to Old Trafford in 2019 to work as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s assistant coach having been the sporting director of Central Coast Mariners in Australia. The former United midfielder had served as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant between 2008 and 2013, while he managed Hull City for 24 matches in the 2016-17 campaign.

Liverpool announce squad for United clash

Liverpool have named a 37-man squad for their pre-season tour of Thailand – where they will play Manchester United – and Singapore with new signings Darwin Nunez and Fabio Carvalho included for the first time.

On Saturday, the squad boarded the plane in Manchester to make their long journey around the globe before touching down early on Sunday. The Reds have been busy in the summer transfer window as they announced the stunning capture of Nunez from Benfica in a deal worth up to £85million before completing the signing of the Portuguese Carvalho, 19, who almost joined the Reds from Fulham in the January transfer window.

However, 18-year-old defender Calvin Ramsay is not included in the squad after joining the Reds from Aberdeen last month. Ramsay was signed to provide competition for Trent Alexander-Arnold, who is among the travelling party, but Jurgen Klopp recently revealed that an injury that could cause him long-term problems if not fixed was discovered during his medical.

McTominay outlines Ten Hag impact

Manchester United midfielder Scott McTominay has spoken of the impact of Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff at Old Trafford.

“Now is the time to be optimistic,” McTominay told United Daily. “We’re really looking forward to what’s to come because the way the coaches have presented their ideas to all the players and all the staff is very promising for sure.”

The midfielder added: “I feel good, I feel refreshed, I feel fit and getting over the time difference here, we’re looking forward to a good week in terms of the games that we’ve got coming up and the training as well. I think all of the players are more than locked in to do their jobs for the new coach, for sure.”

Ten Hag outlines tour demands

The new Manchester United boss has had his say on the demands and expectations on the players during their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia.

Man United tour diary

Manchester United’s players were put through their paces on the training pitch within hours of touching down in Bangkok for the first leg of their pre-season tour.

Former United skipper Bryan Robson, an ambassador for the club and part of the travelling party, was at the training ground to personally welcome every player before the session. New United boss Erik ten Hag looked relaxed, laughing and joking, as his staff took the players through a light training session, which started with stretching, bicycle work and running.

The players – including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes – then moved on to some ball work in what was a light first session, following a 12-hour flight direct from Manchester to Bangkok. After that, the players took part in Rondos, the one-touch training exercise where one player is in the middle of a group and must intercept the ball, with Ten Hag watching on intently.

Messi’s prescient Ronaldo warning

Lionel Messi warned Cristiano Ronaldo that his return to Manchester United was unlikely to go to plan due to the uncertain nature of the Premier League.

The Argentine superstar has struggled to find his best form in Paris since his high-profile summer transfer from Barca this summer. Messi was unable to prevent PSG’s Champions League Round of 16 exit against Real Madrid – when he saw his first leg penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois. The following Ligue 1 match after that, when PSG clashed with Bordeaux, saw both Messi and his teammate Neymar booed by PSG fans.

Messi failed to live up to his billing in the French capital, scoring 11 goals in 34 appearances during his debut campaign. Reports have claimed that Messi is unhappy in Paris as he has failed to settle in the city and at the club for multiple reasons but it has been stressed that the player does not wish to re-join Barca, after ending his 16-year stint in Barca’s first team. That draws comparison to Ronaldo’s return to Old Trafford last summer after 12 years away.

Ronaldo took ‘six figure bonus’ before United exit decision

Cristiano Ronaldo took a ‘six figure bonus’ from Manchester United just days ahead of informing the club he wanted a transfer.

Ronaldo wants to leave United just one year on from his return to Old Trafford and the 37-year-old is the only player who has not reported to the club’s pre-season training this month due to ‘family reasons’. This means the Portuguese superstar is not involved in the 31-player squad which has jetted off to Bangkok.

The forward has featured in United’s launch for their new home kit but recorded footage of him alongside David Beckham and Eric Cantona – which had been scheduled to be released at the same time as the new kit – has been put on hold by Adidas until the his future at the club is clarified.

Maguire’s message to United fans

Harry Maguire is one of the many United players who is hopeful of an upturn in form under new boss Erik ten Hag.

He has been in the thick of pre-season training for United so far and is hoping to make an early positive impression on the new coach.

United edging closer to Martinez

As first reported last night, Manchester United have lodged an improved offer of £42million (€50m) for Ajax defender Lisandro Martinez.

The Argentine international wants to join United this summer and has relayed that information to the Dutch club, but this offer still is not quite sufficient.

However, it appears likely that a move is coming to fruition as United look to bolster their squad ahead of the new campaign.

Brobbey’s Man Utd hint

Brian Brobbey has previously dropped a huge hint about joining Manchester United.

When Erik ten Hag was confirmed as the club’s new manager, Brobbey told reporters: “I am very happy for him and he really deserves it after everything he has done for Ajax. If only he brings me with him in two years… no no, joking joking!”

United make improved Antony, Martinez offers

Manchester United have stepped up their pursuit of Ajax duo Lisandro Martinez and Antony with improved offers, reports The Times.

United have made an improved €60million offer for Brazilian forward Antony, which is still €20million or so short of Ajax’s valuation.

The club have also made an offer of €50million for Argentine defender Martinez, of whom they are confident of signing.

Both players are keen to move to Old Trafford this summer, and it could be a case that several more offers are lodged for those deals to come to a fruition.

Brobbey set for Ajax return

Manchester United believe that RB Leipzig striker Brian Brobbey will return to Ajax this summer despite phone calls with Erik ten Hag.

New United boss Ten Hag is on the lookout for more attacking firepower after the news that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to leave United after just one season while Edinson Cavani was among a glut of first-team exits this summer upon the expiration of his contract at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman shares a close relationship with striker Brobbey, who he brought back to Ajax on a six-month loan spell without an option to buy in January. The young striker bagged seven goals in 13 appearances in that spell despite picking up a medial collateral ligament knee injury and he is keen to leave Leipzig permanently this summer.
