The summer transfer window is finally open, and business can officially get underway for Premier League teams.
However, deals from abroad still cannot be completed until July, although that won’t stop Manchester United planning ahead as Erik ten Hag looks to strengthen his new side. A major overhaul is needed at United to get them back to their best, and the midfield is one of the key areas that the Dutchman will be focusing on.
Frenkie De Jong has been heavily linked, as have a number of past and present Ajax players who shone for Ten Hag, as United could be set for their second Dutch revolution, after Louis van Gaal tried his luck. Here is Saturday’s round-up of the latest Manchester United transfer news from Mirror Football.
Barcelona reject De Jong bid
United have been linked with De Jong ever since Ten Hag took over, and Barcelona could look to sell the Dutchman as they battle their financial issues. But according to Fabrizio Romano, United have already made a bid for De Jong, and it’s been rejected.
Talks officially began on June 1, and United’s opening offer of £54million plus add-ons has reportedly been rejected by Barcelona. The clubs remain in contact, and it’s believed that the Spanish side are hoping to receive more money for their midfielder, rather than ruling out a move completely.
De Jong remains a key player for Barcelona, but Xavi hinted that their finances could see him depart the Nou Camp, especially with the Catalan side prioritising a deal for Gavi. “I have said many times that Frenkie is very important. He’s a key player,” the Barcelona manager stated at a press conference. “Then there is also the financial situation of the club and it has to be decided. I’m not talking about Frenkie, in general.”
United announce 11 departures
United have officially released their retained list ahead of the 2022/23 season, with 11 players set to leave the club at the end of the month. It was already public knowledge that Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Edinson Cavani would all move on, but now the Red Devils have put it in black and white.
There are also a whole host of academy stars and players away from the first team that will leave the club, and Ten Hag has a big task on his hands as he looks to replenish the squad. Although United have needed a refresh for a while, they’ll certainly need to fill the now vacant space within the squad.
Full list of United departures effective June 30: D’Mani Bughail-Mellor, Edinson Cavani, Reece Devine, Lee Grant, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic, Paul McShane, Paul Pogba, Connor Stanley, Paul Woolston.
Van de Beek embarrassment
It’s almost been written in the stars that Ten Hag’s arrival would save United outcast Donny van de Beek, as the Dutchman has endured a torrid time at Old Trafford since leaving Ajax. And to add to the narrative even more, United’s interest in De Jong could see the old Ajax pairing reunited in the midfield.
But according to Corriere della Sera in Italy, Van de Beek wants out of United despite the change of manager, as it seems that the last few seasons have made up the Dutchman’s mind. And in the ultimate snub, the report claims that Van de Beek wants to join former United boss Jose Mourinho at Roma.
Roma were interested in signing him last summer, but United blocked a move. And again they expressed a desire in January, although Van de Beek joined Everton instead. But their patience could pay off, and the Dutchman could leave without even being given a chance under Ten Hag.
