Manchester United’s players have all returned to pre-season training this week bar Cristiano Ronaldo, who is continuing to miss out due to ‘family reasons’ as he looks for an exit from the club this summer.
And in more bad news for the Red Devils, Chelsea are said to be considering a move for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong and will attempt to hijack his move to the north west, despite United having agreed a deal to sign him. Elsewhere, Brentford also remain hopeful of re-signing Christian Eriksen.
Mirror Football takes a look at all the latest transfer stories coming out of Old Trafford…
Chelsea land huge De Jong blow
Manchester United remain locked in negotiations to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona this summer, although things have stalled somewhat due to the Spanish club still owing the midfielder money through unpaid wages.
And to make matters worse for United, it has now been revealed that Chelsea are registering interest of their own in the Netherlands international, and are now preparing to hijack Erik ten Hag’s attempt to sign him this summer.
That’s according to staggering reports from Spanish journalist Gerard Romero, who claims that Chelsea are ready to swoop in and pursue the Barcelona playmaker, while Sport say that the Blues are set to offer two players plus cash for De Jong.

Brentford remain hopeful on Eriksen
Manchester United may be set on signing Christian Eriksen this summer after the player verbally agreed to join the club following the end of his contract at Brentford last month, but the Bees still remain hopeful that the Dane will stay on with them ahead of this season.
That’s according to Brentford manager Thomas Frank himself, who declared that the Bees are very much still hoping to bring Eriksen back for a second season, with the manager still in dialogue with the playmaker after meeting with him during the international break.
Frank told BT : “I’m communicating with Christian, but we’ll keep that to ourselves until he’s either signed here or somewhere else. I talked to him for five minutes up in the national team camp [likely in June] and we have been in dialogue since. But I have not met him in Copenhagen. We have told him our good story here, and he knows that version.”
United ‘forced’ to accept Ronaldo decision
With Cristiano Ronaldo shocking Manchester United and new boss Erik ten Hag with his request to leave the club this summer, there have been fears that the Red Devils may well end up losing their star man, but they have responded to any such talk by confirming he is not for sale.
However, according to The Sun, Ten Hag has had to come to terms with the fact that Ronaldo will leave this summer, and that United chiefs have now recognised they cannot keep him against his will and want to avoid a long, drawn-out battle.
Chelsea are said to be eyeing a swoop for the 37-year-old, who has been underwhelmed by the club’s transfer business this summer and ability to compete next season, while a wage cut has also disturbed him and changed his feelings towards an Old Trafford stay.
