Roy Keane makes Premier League title prediction after hectic transfer window activity

Roy Keane has tipped Manchester City to retain their Premier League crown ahead of Liverpool again next season.

Pep Guardiola’s side have dominated domestically under the Spaniard, who has guided City to the Premier League title four times in the last five years. Only the Reds have been able to deny Guardiola in that time – but they came up agonisingly short on the final day of last season, where they were pipped to the domestic crown by a single point.

The top-flight’s ‘Big Six’ have all been active in the transfer market in a bid to boost their title hopes. Chelsea have pulled off a major coup by landing Raheem Sterling in a £47.5million deal, Tottenham have brought in five new faces to bolster their squad, while Arsenal have bagged Gabriel Jesus for a cool £45m.

But while Keane admits that the rest of the Premier League’s big guns will be better this year, he is adamant that City and Liverpool are still streets ahead of their rivals.

Speaking about the likes of Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal to Sky Bet, Keane said: “I don’t think they will close the gap. I think they will be a bit better. They have quality and the recruitment, but you can’t look beyond Liverpool and Man City.”

And he admitted that expects Manchester City to reign supreme again after they captured Erling Haaland; arguably Europe’s most prolific striker. He added: “Brilliant players, they’ve obviously improved with an unbelievable striker [Haaland] and they’ve got one of the greatest managers ever in Pep [Guardiola].”

While their rivals have splashed the cash, it’s been a relatively quiet transfer window for Manchester United. Keane’s old side have failed to get new faces in the door early – leaving Erik ten Hag with a mountain to climb.

The Dutchman is still working with the bulk of a squad that limped to United’s worst-ever finish in the Premier League era last term, with Dutch full-back Tyrell Malacia currently the club’s sole summer recruit.

However, Ten Hag made a positive early impression after steering United to an unexpected 4-0 win over Liverpool earlier this week to kick off their pre-season campaign. And with the hope that more transfer activity is on the horizon at Old Trafford, Keane has tipped his old side to improve under Ten Hag – but has also warned that United won’t be challenging City and Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League anytime soon.

The Irishman added: “The manager no doubt will be given money to spend, how he recruits, four or five experienced players have left the club, which I think is a good thing. But I still don’t see United competing with Liverpool and Manchester City, not just yet.”
