Australia reopened its international borders in February 2022 for the first time since the pandemic began. As countries worldwide gradually loosen their entry guidelines, the Australian travel restrictions are following suit.
Current Australia Entry Requirements For Vaccinated Tourists
Here are the current travel restrictions for fully vaccinated visitors to Australia, which are more lenient than the original entry requirements.
No Pre-Arrival Test
Starting April 18, 2022, fully vaccinated travelers no longer need to obtain a negative pre-arrival test.
Previously, a pre-arrival test had to be taken one day before arrival. This looser requirement applies to airline and cruise ship passengers.
As a result, Australia joins the list of countries without testing requirements.
Overseas Vaccination Certificate
International visitors must provide proof of coronavirus vaccinations to enter. The airline is responsible for verifying the vaccination requirements at check-in.
Lacking proof can result in not qualifying as a fully vaccinated traveler, resulting in a mandatory quarantine, testing or denied entry.
Australian Digital Passenger Declaration
Incoming visitors must also complete a digital passenger declaration. This form collects the traveler’s contact details, travel history for the last 14 days and the local quarantine and testing requirements.
There are no quarantine requirements for fully vaccinated travelers arriving from the United States. However, states can enact local travel restrictions if infection and hospitalization rates increase.
A commercial travel mask mandate still applies for international flights arriving in Australia.
Local states and cities also have public mask rules but vary by location. Masks are usually required in high-risk indoor areas.
Cruise Travel To Australia Restarts
Australia is once again allowing cruise travel starting on April 18, 2022. This is the first time cruise ships can come to Australia since 2020. Only fully vaccinated visitors are welcome to go ashore at this time.
Australia Travel Ban For Unvaccinated Visitors
Australia still prohibits unvaccinated and partially vaccinated visitors for non-essential travel reasons. These international travel restrictions are common across Oceania, Asia, Europe and the Americas.
There are currently no indications that the Australian government will relax this travel ban soon.
While Australia is still only open to fully vaccinated tourists, not having to obtain a pre-arrival test removes a travel barrier. This is a welcome change as travel groups try to make international more accessible.
